Inter-Asia School’s Modern Asian Thought (MAT) project aims to connect the intellectual networks across Asia, forming a platform for mutual support and sharing. Through learning and understanding from one another, it strives to propose effective interpretations, critiques and interventions to current historical situations.

MAT Singapore and Malaysia office not only bases itself in the two places, it also hopes to build up an intellectual platform to connect Southeast Asia. Through the sharing of knowledge, experiences and resources, it aims at creating a communicative network for intellectual and practical action. Our office members’ main concern is to take urgent steps in saving and working up the local knowledge and historical experiences, including the materials from literary supplement and magazines of the early periods. At the same time we collect the materials on the issue of civil society and social movements, in order to contextualize the development of civil society in Singapore and Malaysia. Also, we want to sort out the historical and social problems from the 1950s to 1970s by organizing intellectual workshops and symposiums.
