In order to promote dialogue and interactive space among Malaysian and Hong Kong intellectuals, on July 6th to 8th, Singapore and Malaysia Office of Modern Asian Thought Project (MAT Project, for short) members NGOI Guat Peng, Tan Teng Phee, assistant MAH Wei Li, together with Hong Kong Office members CHAN Ching-kiu, LAW Wing-sang, Ip Iam-chong, Grace Yee and assistant LIANG Xiaodao, went to Kuala Lumpur, Capital of Malaysia and exchanged ideas with citizen groups and civil research institutions there.
On the evening of July 6th, a public lecture themed “Social Movement & Populist Exposition in Hong Kong” was jointly held by Singapore and Malaysia Office of MAT Project, the KL-Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall and Malaysiakini. The lecture, with LAW Wing-sang and Ip Iam-chong as speakers, attracted about 70 audiences to attend. In the section of audience interaction, quite a number of youngsters shared their opinions on Hong Kong’s mainstay, identity, HK-mainland relationship as well as post-colonial issues, etc. The lecture started from 8:00PM and lasted till 10:25PM.
Mr. Tang Ah Chai, host of the lecture, later remarked on Facebook, “Establishing of Modern Asian Thought Project and Inter-Asia School is well-timed in the sense that international interaction and impact have become more obvious and direct under the current trend and that experiences of individual countries can serve as references to one another.” Besides, commentator Foo Yen Chew published an article titled “Referring to Hong Kong Social Experiences” in Oriental Daily on July 11th. In the article, Foo reviewed such concepts as “good politics” and “relationship between communities and ruling machines” mentioned in Ip Iam-chong’s speech, put them under the context of Malaysia, and made corresponding reflections.
The visit to Kuala Lumpur not only aims at getting across Inter-Asia School and Modern Asian Thought Project by means of holding lectures, but also carries our hope of boosting understanding of Malaysian knowledge conditions. The most substantial gain of this visit is that we have established contact and understanding with Centre for Malaysian Chinese Studies (CMCS for short). Both sides have elaborated respective research planning. In addition, Singapore-Malaysia & Hong Kong Offices have also inquired and explored the possibility of making cooperative research projects or joint workshops with CMCS, gaining sound responses. Chiam Yan Tuan, Deputy Director of CMCS, quite agrees on ideas of Inter-Asia School and Modern Asian Thought Project; he especially mentioned that one shouldn’t ignore social education in knowledge production and also asked for the possible cooperation models between each other. Hence, the two offices would hereafter make careful consideration of workable collaborative projects and make more detailed planning. Aside from Chinese associations and local history researches, CMCS also deals with the digitization of Chinese historical materials as its current key research project. Recently, CMCS has obtained book donations from Yang Quee Yee, senior dictionary compiler in Malaysia, and set up Koleksi Khas Yang Quee Yee, in which quite a lot of dictionaries, as well as Chinese literature translations of Peranakas, have been stored.
